Idols Remember Malaysian Freddie Mercury, Sudirman
The Idols pay tribute to Malaysian pop king Sudirman Arshad on the 15th anniversary of his passing.
It was Sudirman Arshad who inspired me to be an entertainer - Saiful Bakeri, Malaysian Idol 1.
He was the king of pop, without question - Nurul Hamid, Akademi Fantasia 2.
He will always be one of Pahang’s greatest sons and one of my all-time heroes - Atie Abu Bakar, Akademi Fantasia 1.
Sudirman, together with P. Ramlee, will always be our greatest entertainer - Bob Usop, Akademi Fantasia 2.
Abang Sudir was our greatest ambassador of pop - Reza Mohamad, Akademi Fantasia 3.
Sudirman was one of the greatest sons of Pahang and Malaysia, a national hero - Rosma Sidik, Akademi Fantasia 1.
He was the world - Asmawi (Mawi) Ani, champion, Akademi Fantasia 3.
Sudirman and P. Ramlee set the benchmark for world class entertainers in Malaysia - Khairul Nizam Wahi, Akademi Fantasia 1.
If there is one singer who made me want to sing, it is Sudirman Arshad - Faizal Ramly, champion, Akademi Fantasia 4.
We all love him, but God loves him more - Azizi Mohamad, Akademi Fantasia 1.
Sudirman was the great man who inspired me to sing Malaysian songs - Mavick Teo, Malaysian Idol 1.
Sudirman Arshad will always be Malaysia’s king of pop.
The Pahang-born singing sensation whose charisma matched that of his idols, Hong Kong’s pop king Roman Tam Pak Sin and Britain’s Freddie Mercury (Freddie Bulsara) was not only a world-class entertainer but also an ambassador of universal love and brotherhood.
Sudirman died of a mysterious illness on February 22, 1992 after entertaining Malaysia and the world for 15 years.
Not unlike Malaysia’s king of the big screen, Tan Sri Teuku Zakaria Ramlee Teuku Nyak Puteh or P. Ramlee, Sudirman left the world at a relatively young age.
He was 37 and at the peak of his singing career when he passed on.
The youngest of 6 siblings, Sudirman was born on May 25, 1955, in Temerloh, Pahang’s second largest town which produced many famous Malaysians in entertainment as well as politics.
Other children of Temerloh include Malaysia’s most popular celebrity chef Redzuawan Ismail (Chef Wan), queen of entertainment Anita Sarawak, her sister and fellow pop star cum actress Noor Kumalasari, their actor father Datuk Mohamad Taib Salleh (Datuk S. Roomai Noor), Singaporean pop queen Rahimah Rahim, her father and Singaporean Nat King Cole Rahim Hamid and Roomai’s cousin, literary giant and Labour Party (defunct) chief Datuk Ishak Mohamad (Pak Sako).
A law graduate of University Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Sudirman won the 1976 Bintang RTM (Stars Of RTM) talent contest organised by national TV station Radio Television Malaysia.
He sang in many guises and in all major Malaysian languages - English, Malaysian, Chinese and Tamil, and had a great rapport with fans.
He never allowed himself to be confined within four walls, and once held a massive [40,000 people] concert in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur, where many low-income native Malaysians and Chinese Malaysians lived and worked.
Sudirman always emphasised national and universal brotherhood in his songs, and always urged his fans to pray for the well-being of the nation.
He often dedicated his songs to the common man, and called on all Malaysians to be generous towards the less-fortunate.
In his songs, he also reminded Malaysians to care for the environment and not to forget their heroes, history and culture.
Sudirman also dabbled in acting, cartooning and business. He acted in the acclaimed 1982 film about economic migrants to the big city “Kami” (“We”).
Cute as Mickey Mouse and only 1.42m tall, he was an easy “chic magnet”. However, he never found true love in his short life.
Sudirman was married to Kamariah (Kay) Jamaluddin for a brief while, but seemed destined to be a single man.
When once asked how he felt being short, he said: “I look up to the Japs. They may be small but they stand tall.”
Sudirman indeed made host country Malaysia stand tall when he sang at the South-East Asia Games’ opening and closing ceremonies in Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka Stadium in 1989.
Dressed in the Malaysian flag, and urging all Asians to be united and strong, he made the event a most memorable one for all participants.
Sudirman did the country proud the same year when he won the title of Asia’s Best Entertainer at a contest in the Royal Albert Hall, London.
One of his reputable contenders was the late Leslie Cheung of Hong Kong.
Some of the pop king’s greatest songs were Chow Kit Road, Basikal Tua [My Old Bike], Hujan [Rain], Balik Kampung [Home To My Village], Dari Jauh Ku Pohon Maaf [I Seek Forgiveness From Afar], A Thousand Million Smiles, Punch Card, Apa Khabar Orang Kampung [Hello Country Folk], Milik Siapa Gadis Ini [Who Does She Belong To], To Know Malaysia Is To Love Malaysia, Kulit [Skin] and Salam Terakhir [My Last Goodbye].
May he live in our hearts forever. Al Fatihah.
